Tamagotchi Plaza

Tamagotchi Plaza is a dull, vapid, and utterly unsatisfying minigame collection that rapidly overstays its welcome. Though charming and visually competent, the underlying gameplay is undercooked, unrewarding, and shallow with its 'free mobile game'-like design.There may be a valid case here for playing with very young children for some very light and simple entertainment, but even then, the price tag is comically high for the shallowness and quantity of content you're getting. I'd suggest you steer clear; it's worth neither your time nor your money.

There really isn’t much more to say about Tamagotchi Plaza. It feels like a throwback to the cheap cash-grab minigame collections of the Wii era—a game trying to skate by on name recognition and little else. Who needs fun when you have a Tamagotchi, right?

I laughed a lot while playing Tamagotchi Plaza and wish more games were this funny and silly but I also can't deny that it's also quite limited. 🛍️

A substantial lack of instructions and in game help, coupled with a poor story, makes Tamagotchi Plaza's value for money and enjoyment level on the low side. It has the potential to be quite innovative if it expands on the game's premise and uses all of the Nintendo Switch’s technology capabilities. Overall, Tamagotchi Plaza fails on a basic level that casts a large shadow on any future instalments. It is extremely different to the original egg-shaped Tamagotchi, and needs more substance to be worth more than a cursory glance considering the physical and digital price tag.

The game is cute and promises to provide about two hours of fun, but after a while, you get bored.

You might come into Tamagotchi Plaza feeling like you’ll be lightly entertained, but all too soon you’ll reach the conclusion that there’s barely anything here that’ll keep your attention for long.

Would it kill them to incorporate parts of the traditional Tamagotchi experience into its video games? Whether that would help with the game or not, at least it’s worth a discussion.

For fans of Tamagotchi or parents seeking a digital babysitter, this Nintendo Switch 2 release delivers ample charm and creative play. Tamagotchi Plaza Nintendo Switch 2 Edition excels in light entertainment and freeform exploration, despite some usability hiccups and a lack of deeper complexity. It’s particularly rewarding for younger players who enjoy interactive job simulations, memorable characters, and relaxed gameplay without penalty. A sleeper hit for its niche if you know what you’re getting into.

I honestly could have wrapped up this review in one word: “Okay”. When I thought about my time with Tamagotchi Plaza, I felt such a middling indifference that the Saitama “okay” meme came to mind. It’s all I can think of because it describes my experience so perfectly. Tamagotchi Plaza isn’t a terrible game, but it’s not a great one either. Had I not been reviewing it, I probably would have played once and lost interest completely. This could be because I feel no attachment to the Tamagotchi brand, as I never grew up with one. Maybe not. Maybe it just is “Okay”.

This Switch version is nothing special. Aside from adding an explorable city that only grants access to each mini-game location, it lacks content beyond repeating the same task over and over again in short, unexciting games.
