Why play it

A wizard academy management sim where you—an obviously benevolent professor—must manage & cast spells on your many apprentices so that they might study the right spells… and perhaps even survive the researching process. Some may die, but oh well, can’t save them all!

If The Fool's Apprentice is not a shovelware scam, it is for sure and for certain an exercise in futility. It makes no attempt to connect to the player or respect their time with basic functions that even the worst mobile games take for granted. Save your money and your blood pressure.

The premise of the game is great, it really is. Unfortunately for me, the game just does not cut it in terms of gameplay. The lack of a pause function really hurts the game. Also, in my opinion, and the pacing could be improved a bit. If you are really interested in the game, I would suggest waiting a bit until the game has received some more updates and patches. Perhaps watch a video or livestream of the game to get a feel for the gameplay loop. Maybe even wait for the introduction of the difficulty modes if the missing active pause function is an issue for you, or the saving of station placements if you tend to get attached to your decorated layouts. Keep in mind that all of this is just my personal opinion. I don’t think that The Fool’s Apprentice is a bad game whatsoever; the premise is interesting, and the game has great potential. I just think it would benefit from quite a bit more polish and a couple extra tweaks. For now, however, I will be giving The Fool’s Apprentice the Thumb Culture Bronze Award.

The Fool's Apprentice is a neat concept that simply needs more time to cook. It has some cool ideas in using magical abilities to augment its management sim gameplay, and its soothing soundtrack complements its tone perfectly. However, a litany of technical issues and critical design flaws make it ultimately unplayable in its current state. Fingers crossed the team at The Planar Danse will be able to support The Fool's Apprentice with updates and fully realise their vision for the game in time.

The Fool's Apprentice is Portal meets Black Mirror, with a dash of The Sims' chaos. It's the rare game that makes being the villain feel both hilarious and horrifying, perfect for players who think, "What if I ran a school… but terribly?" Just remember: when the Council of Mages asks about the "missing" students, those portals don't open themselves.

A fun concept that never realises its full potential, The Fool's Apprentice messes up the management sim experience with technical and gameplay issues.
