It’s a fun, cheerful platformer with plenty of personality and ideas, but perhaps doesn’t achieve all its goals as intended. I’ve walked away thinking Knightling is a solid effort, one that could be iterated upon into something special in the future.

Much like the hero himself, The Knightling might seem small and unimportant, but it can produce great results when it needs to.

Indie action-adventure game The Knightling soars with its traversal and vibes, but sinks with its combat and narrative design.

The Knightling on Xbox is a bright, joyful adventure that captures the essence of why we love this genre — exploration, imagination, and heart. It might not have blockbuster polish or AAA depth, but what it does have is soul, and plenty of it. This is a game that rewards curiosity, encourages playfulness, and doesn’t take itself too seriously. For players who enjoy relaxing exploration, clever world design, and a dose of lighthearted heroism, The Knightling is an easy recommendation. It’s not perfect, but it doesn’t need to be. It’s fun, creative, and full of character — and sometimes, that’s exactly what we need.

The Knightling is quite reminiscent of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in terms of game flow: you have your main quest line and a vast world to explore, with plenty of side quests to help improve your abilities. The only sticking point I had was that combat can be a bit rough when multiple enemies are involved, and enemies have a habit of popping up behind you without warning. Aside from that, The Knightling definitely helped me scratch my open-world adventure itch.

The Knightling has the potential to be a fantastic indie game, but it's like a knight without a helmet: the basics are there, but without the essential elements it's hopeless. Add to that a mediocre combat system that is not at all challenging, framedrops and a lifeless world, and you have a mediocre indie game that is full of potential. This is a real shame, especially since you can tell from the outset that this game just doesn't quite make it. Developer Twirlbound has already fallen short with their first game, Pine, which was far too ambitious. Hopefully they will use the basis of The Knightling to create a world worthy of the name of knight in a future, third game. Third time lucky, Twirlbound!

The Knightling has its charming moments and gives the impression of a world brimming with potential, but it fails to fully realize it due to clumsy combat, repetitive challenges, and disorganized design.

The Knightling is a solid game that fails to stand out due to its simplistic combat system and reliance on side quests that never prove memorable.

Like its tiny hero lugging a giant shield, The Knightling carries a lot of promise. Its vibrant platforming and playful worldbuilding shine, but slow combat, pacing stumbles and a drab final act weigh it down. It never quite becomes the legend it wants to be, but it’s still an earnest, endearing adventure worth a look if you’re more into hopping and gliding than hammering foes.

The Knightling is a delightful surprise in 2025’s action-adventure lineup. It’s not perfect—bugs, difficulty spikes, and limited side content keep it from true greatness—but it more than makes up for those flaws with heart, creativity, and sheer charm. Sliding through Clesseia on a shield, uncovering whimsical details, and gradually growing from trainee to hero is an adventure worth taking. For fans of Zelda-inspired worlds, indie action games, or simply anyone craving a fresh spin on the classic knight’s tale, The Knightling delivers a fun, heartfelt, and memorable journey. – ColdMoon
