The Last Case of Benedict Fox is a disappointingly uneven Metroidvania that’s just as likely to engage as it is to enrage.

The Last Case of Benedict Fox's incredible lore and art direction are regularly hampered by mediocre combat and platforming mechanics.

Intriguing puzzles aside, this metroidvania is plagued with systems that seem designed to frustrate.

The Last Case of Benedict Fox could be a great game, but it's let down by its own confused execution.

When playing through The Last Case of Benedict Fox, it's clear that the developer had high ambitions for the project, but none of it really comes together in the end. Combat feels unresponsive, puzzles quickly become tedious, sound design is lacking, the story is hard to follow and delivered with sub-par voice acting, and that's simply too much for some nice lighting and visual effects to paper over, especially when games like Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown and Ultros exist.

This highly addicting definitive edition of The Last Case of Benedict Fox was a blast to explore! The improvements to existing game mechanics as well as the additions of new story content, puzzles, and the arena complete the package, resulting in one of the best Metroidvanias I've played to date.

The Last Case of Benedict Fox: Definitive Edition improves some aspects of the original version such as the approach to combat and some quality-of-life features. Nevertheless, most of the production limitations of the past can also be found in this new interaction, such as the sense of disorientation during exploration and a lack of accuracy of hitboxes and inputs.

The Last Case of Benedict Fox on PS5 is a huge improvement on last year's release, with fluid and responsive combat being its best feature.

With great art direction and fun, though infuriating, puzzles. The Last Case Of Benedict Fox is a fun Metroidvania with great brain teasers and entertaining combat. It just takes a while to experience the best parts of the game. Exploration is fun but suffers in places like the combat and puzzles. But it doesn't keep the game from being fun all the same.

As an AA title, The Last Case of Benedict Fox offers a lot of value, and its inclusion in Microsoft Game Pass makes it available to a wider range of audience. It may not revolutionize the Metroidvania genre, but creates a lot of potential for future games to take advantage of.
