The Last Hero of Nostalgaia is a competent RPG with a world that helps it stand out from the pack, even if it doesn't stand too far above it.

On providing a premise far removed from the regularly harrowing and oppressive tone we're used to, you can't fault developer Over the Moon Games' more satirical intentions.

Challenging Soulslike with a heavy dose of nostalgia

For those who like retro games, soulslikes and a good dose of humor, The Last Hero of Nostalgaia is the perfect choice. For those who don't know the genre, but are curious and want to start slowly, it is also a good option. With well-paced combat, standardized controls within the genre, and extremely well-crafted visuals, the game is a great choice for both veterans and newcomers. The lack of New Game + is a sin, leaving only the option to replay the title at higher difficulties.

As Soulslikes go, The Last Hero of Nostalgaia certainly boasts a neat hook on account of its smugly cynical narrative and frequent bouts of cheeky humour. However, the occasionally imprecise combat, uninteresting enemies and worlds coupled with a raft of frustrating bugs and a general lack of polish all serve to commit The Last Hero of Nostalgaia to an oblivion of mediocrity.

Your mileage with the Switch port will depend on your individual tolerance for asset streaming stutter. For those looking for a smoother experience, the Xbox version (and presumably the Playstation port) can offer that. But the Switch provides a flawed though still highly enjoyable time overall.

The Last Hero of Nostalgaia aspired to create a compelling satire on unending cycle of nostalgia, but during its development the devs got somehow tangled in the restraining string of its own narrator. This somehow unique love letter to Dark Souls is not only sprinkled with various nostalgic gags from popculture, but filled with endless references, humor, and lack of original ideas' Bugs, glitches and more than a decade of idealization created this soulslike mess which has its moments, but somehow misses the very point it's trying to make.

The Last Hero of Nostalgaia pays homage to soulslike genre while telling a funny story with a lot of good irony. Nonetheless, the overall quality is too low for a demanding genre wit too many good games.
