Why play it

DLC pack 1 cannot be purchased outside of the expansion pass. This first DLC pack for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the wild doesn't include any story additions but does include new side quests, armour, features and a new trial. Master mode is a new game mode which makes all monsters stronger and gives them regenerating health. You'll also encounter powerful new enemies, and even enemies and treasure chests up in the air. The Trial of the Sword is a new challenge where you start with no equipment, and has to fight through 45 rooms of enemies. Your reward: powering up the Master Sword. Hero's Path allows you to see the path you've travelled. About 200 hours of gameplay can be tracked. Travel medallion is a new item which allows you to register your location as a travel gate on the map. The Korok Mask is Found in a chest. If equipped, it will shake to inform you when a Korok is nearby. There are also eight hidden items for you to find. The following items, which pay tribute to The Legend of Zelda series, can now be found scattered across Hyrule: Majora's Mask, Midna's Helmet, Tingle's Hood, Tingle's Shirt, Tingle's Tights, Phantom Helmet, Phantom Armor and Phantom Greaves.

The Master Trials doesn't make any epochal changes to the established Breath of the Wild formula, but by packing in one of the game's best quests, some welcome new features, and a hard mode to be reckoned with, it more than paves the way for the starrier story expansion to come.

The costumes are loot for fans, and the Trial of the Sword is an entertaining test. Even so, nothing here substantially builds upon the core game

Trials is a hodgepodge of stuff that should have been patched in and stuff worthy of extra development time, but since there's still another chapter that promises a new narrative and a dungeon -- the Season Pass might be worth the full price yet. Until then just ask yourself how much you play Breath of the Wild, read some trusted opinions, and go from there.

The game's first expansion plays to that strength by letting you work your way through it at your own pace. If you're looking for more story, though, you'll have to wait until The Champion's Ballad, the second expansion, serenades players this fall.

While Breath of the Wild's first DLC pack contains some fantastic moments, on the whole it feels light and, frankly, not yet worth the cost.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's first DLC pack, while not essential, tremendously capitalizes of the game's fantastic mechanics.

Raising the bar when it comes to the enemies' strength will force the players to plan their approaches in more strategic ways while the Trial of the Sword will push their endurance and tactical creativity to the maximum. Adding to this are Link's new outfits and something known as The Hero's Path, which will consolidate Breath of the Wild's magnificent experience and stir up new reasons to return to the game.

While the DLC Pack 2 will provide us with some new story content, the DLC Pack 1 still provides a solid amount of goodies to keep Breath of the Wild fans occupied through the summer months.

It’s extremely difficult to say whether the Expansion Pass is value for money. While the Master Trials DLC contains some great additional features, it’s a little light on content at present. If you’re on the fence about the Expansion Pass, it seems sensible to wait until we learn more about The Champion’s Ballad before you invest. However, the Master Trials is still a great package for anyone still venturing through Hyrule.
