Why play it

"A powerful ancient evil has arisen, and the war to save humanity has begun! The Mummy Demastered throws you into a 16-bit-inspired battle against the undead in a 2D, nonlinear, action-packed adventure. As an elite agent in the monster-hunting Prodigium organization, you must use a variety of weapons, upgrades, and mysterious artifacts to defend mankind against the supernatural hordes of Princess Ahmanet. Your Prodigium unit is already on the scene, but HQ lost contact with them hours ago. Only by exploring tombs, forests, abandoned tunnels, and the cursed streets of London will you discover the fate of your allies. But beware - Ahmanet commands legions of undead, insects, plague-ridden vermin, and worse! If you're not careful, you'll be the next soul in her army."

The Mummy Demastered is an attractive side-scrolling action game from WayForward that tries to makes the most of a gloomy license.

Those complaints aside, I enjoyed my time with The Mummy Demastered from near beginning to end. (My initial playthrough took four hours but I still have half of the 50 optional "relics" to suss out.) This game doesn't do anything meaningfully new or original for metroidvania fans, but everything here is solid and WayForward got the fundamentals right... in a licensed Mummy adaptation, of all things.

They say don't judge a book by its cover, and you shouldn't judge this game based on its movie tie-in; with The Mummy Demastered, WayForward may have reached its apex. It deserves to stand on its own as one of the best recent examples of not only a pixel art aesthetic, but as an excellent combination of run 'n gunning, platforming and exploration. The game benefits from paying homage to multiple 16-bit ancestors rather than strictly sticking to its celluloid source material; The Mummy Demastered is a polished, accomplished and satisfying adventure that will entertain more than just Metroidvania fans.

Aside from the simple fact it exists, the biggest surprise about The Mummy Desmastered is that it's actually quite good.

After 2017's "The Mummy" starring Tom Cruise, a game was needed to complete the joy for the fans and WayForward studios surprised them with a 16-bit action game. It's a really exciting experience after all, there are lots of guns to shoot with and lots of different areas to conquer. Although the death mechanism can become boring after a while, but the whole game is a fun journey.

"I liked" The Mummy Demastered ", but it is precisely because of its short duration and these failures that I have said the reason why I would not pay the 20 lerels that they ask for in digital stores (it should be noted that the game is digital and is available for Xbox, PSN, Steam, and Switch.) Personally I would wait for sales, as I did in the Nintendo Christmas sales, in which along with a voucher that I had it stayed at 10 euros, a price at which it is a must if you like the genre.

The Mummy Demastered is a retro inspired game good enough to both whet the nostalgic urges of people of a certain age whilst fulfilling the needs of newcomers alike.

The Mummy Demastered hits most of the right notes in bringing back nostalgia-driven 16-bit gameplay and aesthetics. While not without its flaws, anyone looking for something similar to Metroid or Axiom Verge would do well to give this a shot.

A decent blast of fun let down by a slew of frustrating elements

The Mummy Demastered feels less like a movie tie-in and more like a love letter to the metroidvania genre. The art style will appease a retro gamer appetite while it brings some modern elements to keep it fresh and engaging. If you're a fan of games of this ilk, then it is a must-have purchase. If you're not sure what metroidvania is, give it a go anyway. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
