Why play it

The Serpent Rogue is an action-adventure game built around exploring a medieval fantasy world, mastering the art of alchemy, and taming wild creatures. You play as the Warden, a mysterious alchemist, who needs to put their skills to protect this realm from the encroaching Corruption. Craft, brew, boil & concoct and protect the realm from The Serpent Rogue!

Story and worldbuilding

The Serpent Rogue has laid down roots on Mount Morbus, wherefrom its seething Corruption spreads and threatens to overwhelm the realm. It is your task as the Warden to confront it and restore balance to the natural order of things. Explore every corner, unearth secret passages and gain knowledge to stand against the incoming disaster. The game is heavily focused on crafting and experimenting with multiple types of potions and receipts. Use alchemy skills to transform or create situations to your own advantage. Set up your mixing table and help the denizens of this cursed land; take their quests and earn resources to further your exploits. All your actions can create interesting sequences of cause and effect. Gather too many pets in one place and this will attract blood-thirsty Reapers that feed on alive. Forget to bury the perished ones and your location starts to attract corpse-eating ghouls, which attack everything on their way. Gather too many items in one location and be ready to deal with plague-spreading vermin. You can transform yourself or anyone else into… well, anyone! Brew potions that change certain aspects of creatures you meet on the way. Alter your body, so that poison will heal you, or use special abilities to other species. Wreak havoc or create a flawless mechanism from a chicken farm that produces shovels… It’s all up to you!

Something I don’t often remark on for games is the soundtrack, but I’m going to for The Serpent Rogue. I loved how each area had a different track, some darker and menacing, others more lighthearted and serene. Most of the safe areas had music that served well to not be distracting, especially when trying to work through the brewing process or recover losses. Other areas, even some of the safe areas, had musical tones that kind of set me on edge a little, reminding me of the futility of some of my efforts and the fragility of my situation.

The Serpent Rogue just didn’t hold my interest for too long and despite numerous times dipping in and out, I found myself easily distracted and disengaged from the experience. A real shame.

The Serpent Rogue is a fun experience the whole way through, a slow burn that’s well worth your time.

Like the potions you'll mix, The Serpent Rogue is an odd concoction-a mixture of casual open-world play and twitch combat. I definitely prefer the former, but like the joy I felt when finding a successful formula, figuring out a way to crush an enemy after several defeats feels like an accomplishment. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go find some blueberries.

The Serpent Rogue is an occult action-platformer that takes in a world where chaos and corruption are taking over. To put an end to this torment, I needed to craft potions, refine my arsenal of items, and engage in combat with a variety of enemies. Was this journey one to write home about? Or did I wish I got back sooner? Find out in this Rapid Review.

The Serpent Rogue focuses all the experience on resource gathering and crafting, relegating every other aspect of gameplay to the role of a co-primary.

The Serpent Rogue can be a bit daunting to get into but if you fancy an action/adventure roguelike game that doesn’t hold your hand and dabbles in a lot of crafting then you’ll really enjoy it. The world is fun to explore and there is always something new to find or something new to research and craft to use. It has some things that can be improved but overall, I really enjoyed this cel-shaded medieval fantasy trip.

Despite some initial confusion, The Serpent Rogue is a highly creative, dark-themed adventure for any intrepid explorer. The game offers a wide range of learning and crafting options in keeping with the main character’s role as an alchemist. While this visually appealing fantasy adventure may not appeal to survival game enthusiasts per se, it is above all a demanding title full of challenges. If you persevere and don’t give up after a few initial setbacks, you certainly won’t regret the time you’ve spent on the game. On the other hand, there are a few issues that still need to be worked on, so you might want to wait for the first patch.

The Serpent Rogue has times that it can be incredibly frustrating, early on the lack of information really confused me. I deleted my save game so that I could experience it fresh on 2 occasions. I didn’t want to base the review on that frustration because it wouldn’t have been such a shame. Once everything clicked I really enjoyed the game. A bit of work needs to be done on the combat system, throwing potions seems slow and can often be dodged entirely. Serpent Rogue is a great title in a world that looks great and sounds amazing. It is for these reasons I award it the Thumb Culture Gold Award
