Why play it

Fresh from the oven, Toast Time: Smash Up brings the unique toast-based recoil/reload action from cult smash hit Toast Time to the multiplayer brawler/esports genre.

Story and worldbuilding

Assume the role of TERRY (Toast-Ejecting Recoil & Reload System) - a humble and solitary toaster with an uncontrollable love for English breakfasts, hats and scheduling – and 'lay the table' for your unexpected guests. Launch toast, crumpets and magnitudes of other breakfast paraphernalia at the beasties. Bounce around and crush them with your hot metallic mass. Tip over bins, and use the environments to your advantage. Drink a little coffee and go a little crazy. Do everything it takes to defend toast time – you are Monday morning's final hope. Have your toast and eat it.

Toast Time is the kind of game that feels like it could've been something truly special if it spent a little more time in the oven; the core gameplay of toast blasting madness is fantastic fun, but the sparse offering of content makes this a game that doesn't take too long to chew through.

All in all, while I was honestly a tad skeptical by its initial concept, I found myself slowly falling in love with it and having a good time slowly going through each level and playing multiplayer with my friends. If you're a fan of mindless arcade fun, I'd definitely recommend adding it to your library

Overall, Toast Time: Smash Up! is a disappointment despite it trying to be charming with its puns and style. I also would say that it is not worth its current price of $9.99. You are better off getting a game with more control and content for that value.

It may not be the main event in your next local multiplayer gathering but Toast Time: Smash Up! is definitely worthy of at least being part of a rapid fire gaming playlist with pals.

Overall, I enjoyed my time with Toast Time: Smash Up! It is a nice call-back to the simpler times in gaming. Honestly, I could see myself playing this game back when I was 10 with my original Game Boy. It is a wacky time when you’re able to get 4 friends together to play! The single player was addictive enough that players will be able to ignore the difficulty being off at times. All in all, though, playing this game made me that much more excited for breakfast tomorrow morning!

While Toast Time: Smash Up works reasonably well as a very different single-player game and an oddly chaotic multiplayer experience it falls into the “acquired taste” category. If you’re seeking something arcade-ish that’s cute and a bit different it may well do the trick. Mixing action, some physics, and a minimalist art style in a new way was ambitious, whether or not that will equate to sustained enjoyment will likely vary in this case.
