At its core, Unsouled is a fun 2D pixel-art action RPG set in Japanese culture. The game focuses primarily on combat, counterattacks, and chaining them into powerful combos, which serve as its cornerstone and driving force. The icing on the cake in this regard is the partially destructible environment, which you can use to your advantage when fighting enemies. You’ll find solid RPG elements here that liven up the gameplay. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of flaws that drag the game down. Enemies are severely unbalanced, regardless of the difficulty level chosen, and the desynchronization of sound with movement spoils the good impression of the combat. Unsouled is definitely not for everyone; it’s more of a title for fans of the gameplay style, the visual presentation, or players seeking a specific challenge.

I was shocked by how incredible this game feels to play. Paired with a solid story, great music, and surprising depth it’s an easy recommendation on Game Pass or for its $20 price tag at launch. Whether you’re looking for a balls to the wall thrill ride or something that feels great and is chill to play you can customize the difficulty how you see fit. If anything you’ve read about here sounds interesting then you should check this fantastic game out.

'Unsouled' is a unique combination of top-down perspective and the key elements of the fighting games. Although the entire stage is a bit short, the game provides a variety of additional contents to immerse yourself in its deep-structured combat system. While the game surely needs an improvement on the tutorials for beginners and lack of visibility, its intense combat mechanic is worth an experience.

Unsouled has undergone 6 years of development and didn’t have to worry about another similar style of game to clash with it. This action RPG has some systems structured around the fighting games mechanics and reimagined in an eagle eye view perspective. The story is also well placed to keep the interest guessing. A little lack of art styles which makes it difficult to spot the enemies’ motions, which naturally makes the game harder than it should be, but the core mechanics are clear enough that it would provide a new challenge for all action RPG gamers, and surely to make the rest of the existing action genres feel a lot more easier after giving this game a try.
