Valorant is a clever tactical hero shooter that's plenty deep, and a lot of fun to master.

Valorant hooks you match after match with tight, tactical gameplay, albeit in rather barebones fashion.

Valorant may still be more promise than reality in some ways, but what already exists is strong enough to bring in players and keep them there while Riot refines the experience. Valorant, as of this writing, is at a fantastic starting point, and there’s every reason to believe it’s only going to get better from here.

Valorant’s gunplay feels just as weighty and precise as CS:GO’s, with a structure that hits all the same highs and lows. Abilities sometimes let you outsmart people rather than simply outshoot them, and I’m excited about playing in a squad of friendly and coordinated pals. If and when they fall away, though, I expect I will too.

As a hardcore shooter fan since the '90s, Valorant feels very well designed, and provides me with a rush I haven't gotten out of so many other big genre games in the past five years. But Valorant feels like it was meticulously designed in a laboratory to fault. It's fitting given that Riot has over a decade of data and esports experience, but the sterile feel of it does impact my decision to play it more regularly.

Despite missing a few features from the PC version and eye-watering prices for customisation items, Riot has crafted an incredible shooter in Valorant and done a stellar job at transitioning it over to PS5. It's a unique breed of multiplayer shooter that won't be for everyone, but those looking for an intense, competitive experience won't find anything better on Sony's console.
