Why play it

Vengeance Hunters is an adrenaline fueled Neo-Geo hardware developed beat’em’up that lets you and a friend in local co-op fight mutants, zombies, punks, gangsters, lab techs with bombs (you read that correctly), suited mystery men, cyborgs and more across multiple stages, sub-levels and secret areas. You'll be focused on fast and frantic action, combos and even a small bit of story. Vengeance Hunters features an amazing OST as well as incredible pixel art. Combat isn't the standard era combat that you've seen over and over since the 90's. Each playable character has their own Signature Move and style that will greatly change how you play.

Story and worldbuilding

Oppressed citizens of earth have not only had enough of the oppression and desolation forced upon them by unknown evils, but they yearn for vengeance. And they shall have it!

Vengeance Hunters does many things well. Its pixel art is superb across the board, with some very cool-looking enemies. It also has a lot of interesting ideas in its combat mechanics that allow seasoned gamers to dig deep. It's a game that ranges from the impressive to the occasionally dubious. Enemy repetition starts to grate a little, but then excellent and imaginative boss battles redress the balance. We don't feel quite so comfortable with the omission of grabs, the odd format of its sub-weaponry, or its rather overbearing number of explosive obstacles, but we can't ignore that it's competent and well-executed in many other key areas. Essential? Perhaps it falls just short of that, but for fans of the genre and those who get a thrill out of mining combo possibilities, there's a bright, solid, and at times rather clever belt scroller here.

Vengeance Hunters is one of the better and most enjoyable beat’em ups to release in the last year or so. It has that perfect 90s flair, combat is surprisingly deep, boss battles are quite unique and provide a decent challenge. While levels do feel a bit long, the overall experience is incredibly enjoyable and is definitely a must play; especially if you’re a fan of classic beat’em ups. Don’t miss this little gem.
