Why play it

Wavetale is a story driven, third-person action-adventure platformer, set in an island world built atop the remains of a once magnificent city. Player takes on the role of Sigrid, a headstrong girl who gains the ability to run on water through the help of a mysterious shadow. Wavetale offers a tight-knit story combined with a charming art style and delightful soundtrack and invites players to explore its world through its fast-flowing gameplay, where traditional platforming elements meet a unique surfing experience on a dynamic ocean. The intuitive controls make Wavetale accessible and family friendly, while at the same time encouraging mastery as the player will need to understand the full range of movement. Guide Sigrid through the archipelago as the calamity that once sunk the city once again looms on the horizon.

Wavetale is a gentle, easygoing game that suits players who don't want to strain themselves, as its quick runtime ensures the play doesn't dry up. We enjoyed skidding around on the ocean and swinging from great heights with our grappling hook. We only wished the camera movement and other mechanics were a little smoother. The game is nonetheless pretty fun – after all, it's hard not to enjoy surfing through a picturesque, water-filled landscape. While we've played far better games, we felt like this short title was still a good one to dip your toes into.

Wavetale provides a cozy, enjoyable ride of exploration and puzzle solving. The story is one big side quest, but its subtext is well written - global warming, industrialism and the hubris of humanity. Gameplay is fluid and enjoyable with an excellent soundtrack and decent voice acting. Screen tearing and audio glitches distract but ultimately do not deter me from recommending this as a decent weekend getaway.

In its brief yet emotionally charged and intuitive gameplay, Wavetale manages to convey a wealth of emotions, raise a host of questions, captivate with its stunning scenes, and entertain in a variety of ways. The game’s relaxing nature allows you to let your imagination run wild, leave your stress behind, and simply drift along on the waves of a scattered city, because you haven’t experienced anything this soothing in this fast-paced world in a long time. Despite a few noticeable hiccups, however, you can look forward to a relaxing platformer with a beautiful message.

While Wavetale's elegant surfing/platforming foundation is engaging, choppy waters within its design & storytelling keep it from being a huge splash.

Wavetale is an absolute joy. It's a game where you're exploring the watery ruins of a post-apocalyptic world, but it makes that exploration so much fun that you can't help but get swept up in the sheer fun of it all.

Wavetale is a fun adventure that's spoiled by repetition and some technical issues.

I'm thoroughly impressed with Wavetale as it completely surpassed my expectations by being one of the most beautifully captivating indies that I've ever played. Even though it's a tad short, I can definitely see myself playing through it again and again.

If you can forgive the odd technical issue and you’re happy to sink into a rhythm of somewhat repetitive missions, Wavetale offers up an enjoyable five or six hours of laid-back gameplay. Its stylish and smooth traversal remains an absolute joy from start to finish: whether you’re skating along the water’s surface or jumping through wind tunnels, you’re going to have a smile on your face.
