Whimside

I should preface this by saying that Whimside is my first experience with a bottom-of-the-screen idle game. It’s undeniably cute. The visuals are charming, and the gameplay mechanics aren’t demanding. That said, I wouldn’t exactly call it an “idle” game, not in the way I expected, anyway. You can’t just leave it running and focus entirely on something else. Progressing in Whimside still requires your attention at regular intervals. And in that sense, it doesn’t quite work as a productivity-friendly background game. If that’s what you’re looking for, I wouldn’t recommend it. However, if you’re aware of this and just want a relaxing, low-stakes experience with cute creatures and simple mechanics, Whimside might be worth a look. Unfortunately, I’m not the target audience, but I can see the appeal. The demo is available on Whimside’s Steam page. If you’re curious, give it a try and make up your own mind!

While Whimside is too attention-demanding to be an idler, it’s still a rewarding, unique take on the barely-tapped screen-sitter market on Steam. What it lacks in utility, it makes up for in charm and depth, even if the latter is a detriment to some gamers. For just a few bucks, you can start creating creatures that feature on the bottom of your monitor – even if they need your clicks more than the rest of your screen.

All in all, Whimside is a charming little game that is great for what it is and absolutely delivers on what it promises. The art is adorable, and the sound design is great. While it might not have a ton of content and I would love for some more late-game objectives, it is still a fun little game to have running while you are busy doing other tasks. It is currently on sale for £4.39 until August 21st, and honestly, for that price, it is absolutely worth checking out if this is your kind of genre. All in all, I will be giving Whimside the Thumb Culture Gold Award.

For an idle game, Whimside demands a surprising amount of micromanagement. It doesn't feel like a background game; it feels like a never-ending loop of low-energy busywork. If Whimside excels in one area, it's definitely the art. The pixel art style is charming, with a soft, cozy feel that perfectly suits the game's laid-back concept. As a fan of pixel art in general, I really appreciated the effort put into making each creature look distinct, even with their modular mash-up designs. Seeing how different body parts combine together is genuinely one of the most creative aspects of the game, and easily one of the most fun to explore early on.
