Why play it

Hunt the corrupted in backwaters lost to history. Fight back against a timeless evil that pits you against twisted monsters and other desperate Hunters – solo or in a group – in a high-stakes, tactical, PvPvE, first person shooter. There are no heroes here. Risk everything as Hunt consumes you.

Story and worldbuilding

The year is 1896, and you are a Hunter tasked with eliminating the savage, nightmarish monsters that have infested the Louisiana Bayou. Play alone or in teams of two or three, as you search for clues to help you track your target and compete against other Hunters who are after the same reward. Kill and banish your target, collect the bounty, and then get ready for the showdown; once the bounty is in your hands every other Hunter on the map will be after your prize. Show no mercy as you fight through a dark, ruthless world with brutal, period-inspired weapons, as you level up, unlock gear, and collect experience and gold for your Bloodline.

I love the idea of Hunt: Showdown 1896, but in practise it's mostly abandoned by people either sprinting all the time or camping all the time. It's hard to "get good" in this game because, one; it doesn't tell you how to, so you have to watch youtube videos and read reddit threads to figure things as basic as what UI elements mean in the menus, and two; because everyone else is already good and you die before you can get anything done or learn anything. I've made some progress, but doing so was a frustrating and gruelling experience that wasn't entirely down to my own incompetence. If you're a glutton for punishment this could be the extraction shooter for you, but it's hard to recommend to anyone that isn't already embedded in it.

The Hunt: Showdown 1896 might be the best extraction shooter out there right now. It marries weapons and traits into a meaningful character loadouts with solid gameplay mechanics set against a gritty, horrific world. But this won't be news to Hunt veterans, to whom this latest update and upgrade will ultimately be best enjoyed. The onboarding experience seems a bit of a bridge too far to really welcome in new blood to mire of the bayou or chill of the mountains. However, if you have some friends to jump in together, and if you're willing to stick it out to really level up in this game, you will surely be rewarded for your sweat and tears.

Although Crytek's multiplayer relaunch fumbled on certain launch-window errors and design alterations, Hunt: Showdown 1896 is still the premier extraction shooter.

Hunt: Showdown 1896 is an impressive overhaul to a pretty enjoyable game. While the UI has sparked controversy and the team is set to revamp it further, many players have had performance issues on PC that are still present. Regardless, it’s impressive to see the visual enhancements for PS5 and Series X/S that bring the game a bit closer to the medium/high-end PC experience, especially with the jump to 60fps across all platforms. While its rogue-like elements don’t always sit well with me, I can’t deny how fun the game can often be, even if I am dying as frequently as I am.

A nail-biting triumph that is without equal in the extraction shooter genre, Hunt: Showdown 1896's eye-opening overhaul couldn't come at a better time. Whatever Crytek had in mind for Hunt: Showdown 1896, they definitely got a bullseye on the target because the game delivers everything it promised, and then there are some more with brass knuckles and no punches held! If you want a gruesome game to spike your dopamine and adrenaline in a way only a few games can, grab Hunt: Showdown 1896. Pick your hunter, choose your loadout, and get to some rootin' tootin' cowboy shootin' 'cause this one's a silver bullet in the darkness of the genre.
