Why play it

Sonic Mania is a side-scrolling platformer that pays homage to the original Sega Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog games. Players choose from Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles, each with unique abilities, and speed through 13 zones that include redesigned stages from past games alongside original levels. The game features special stages for collecting Chaos Emeralds, time attack with online leaderboards, and split-screen competitive multiplayer.

Story and worldbuilding

After the events of a previous adventure, Sonic and Tails detect a powerful energy signal on Angel Island and fly out to investigate. Dr. Eggman's elite robots, the EggRobos, reach the source first, a magical gemstone called the Phantom Ruby, and are transformed by its power into the Hard-Boiled Heavies. The gem warps Sonic, Tails, and the island's guardian Knuckles across familiar territories as they race to stop Eggman from harnessing the ruby's reality-bending abilities. With the Hard-Boiled Heavies pursuing their own ambitions and Eggman scheming to use the Phantom Ruby to retake control of Little Planet, the trio must chase the doctor through zone after zone before his plans can be realized.

1992 is alive and well. Christian Whitehead and team turn in a beautiful rewrite of the 16-bit Sonic games with all-new stages.

A breakneck platformer that uses classic Sonic as a foundation for something fresh and exciting.

If more of what Sonic is what you want, then this is very much that, but more, and bigger, and faster. But for me, as someone with fond memories but key criticisms, Sonic Mania seems content to paint over some of the series' problems rather than fix them, making for a game that falls a little short of what might have been.

Sonic Mania is short but sweet. It even functions as a proper Sonic 4 if you don't count the episodic Sonic 4 (remember that one?). As long as the same team is in charge I can easily deal with one of these every few years or so while Sega tries to strike Sonic Adventure gold again and again with their 3D iterations.

Sonic Mania clearly articulates Sonic's true appeal: Sonic is pure joy, a spinning ball of fun blazing a trail towards the next adventure.
