Starlight Legacy

Overall, I enjoyed the experience but was left wanting more. I wanted more world-building, lore, and character development. In addition, several gameplay flaws are difficult, if not impossible, to overlook.

Starlight Legacy is a solid game. If you’re younger, the nostalgia factor isn’t going to affect you, and you’re not really going to care much for this title. But if you grew up with the older Final Fantasy games and other old RPG’s, Starlight Legacy will be a very good sub $15 purchase.

Starlight Legacy is aptly named, considering the legacy past RPGs have on today's adventures. It is accessible for both veterans and new fans who may be intrigued by older titles but don’t want to have infrequent saves. The use of quality of life improvements elevates the classic look of retro RPGs and creates a captivating humorous tale so good a sequel is hoped for.

Starlight Legacy is a 16-bit JRPG that gives players a lot of options in terms of how to progress. From choosing which order to tackle the four main provinces, to customizing a character's weapon and item loadout and changing their elements, to even turning random encounters off and on or changing how much experience is rewarded after a fight, there are plenty of ways to either make the game easier for new players or make it more challenging for seasoned JRPG veterans. There are a few quirks that some players might have issues with, but Starlight Legacy is a fun classic-style RPG that's worth checking out.

A nostalgic JRPG adventure through familiar stars

On one hand, Starlight Legacy might not blow the world away with any huge innovation or captivating ideas. But everything here is rock solid and well made, and this is easily the best game I’ve played from eastasiasoft in years. I’m also happy to see there might be potential sequels in the works. If you’re a fan of retro JRPGs and want something fun and inexpensive, this is the game for you.

Starlight Legacy will appeal to a very specific older gamer who played the original Pokémon and 16-bit Final Fantasy games. While it is really short for a JRPG (about 8-10 hours), it earns its value due to its fair price point. It’s a very condensed adventure that packs in all the beats quickly and doesn’t overstay its welcome.

For people who look back to the 16-bit JRPGs of yesteryear with reverence, this is a great way to revisit that look, feel, and style of play

At roughly ten hours of gameplay, it never has a chance to hit a long stride, but it’s a pleasant bite of game for someone looking for a wind-down after this year’s glut of long-play classic JRPGs. The game is also another great reminder that indie developers are out there doing their best for the love of the game. When it shines through, maybe it still can’t out-gleam the professional classics, but it’s proof that there’s still a lot to this nostalgic genre to love.
