Twisted Tower is a solid game all around. While I don’t think it will do much to change Thomas Brush’s reputation within the indie scene, it certainly demonstrates his artistic vision and exceptional eye for visual design. If you have four hours and $14.99 to spare, Twisted Tower is well worth a look.

In the end, the game is a delight from start to finish with a nice twist to the story that fits well.

Despite its aesthetic and occasional mechanical similarities to 2K Games' series, Twisted Tower stands out with its action-focused gameplay and a welcome emphasis on a linear structure packed with surprises that keep the player hooked until the end.

Twisted Tower is a great shooter that makes the most of its excellent audiovisuals to deliver a highly entertaining game which isn’t just a feast for the eyes, but is also great fun to play. Given that you haven’t come here for the story and are looking for a game with highly competitive PvP that will give you a few hours’ worth of fun, Twisted Tower is a safe bet for shooter fans. And if you’re someone who enjoys a macabre atmosphere and striking audiovisuals, you absolutely must play Twisted Tower. Translated with DeepL.com (free version)

I absolutely loved Twisted Towers; the level design was fun, although not too crazy, and the gunplay worked well. Sadly, the story was rather obvious with its plot, but boy, the little twist at the end made me laugh. No real twist with the story, just a snippet of dialogue that took me by surprise. The decent amount of weapons are all good to use; however, some do tend to shine more than others. The pistol felt underpowered at the get-go. I wasn’t sure if BioShock played a part in some of the design and music choices. But it gave me that feeling, and I loved it. Only suggestions are maybe a tad more detail in the environments and more enemy types. Twisted Towers is fast action, fun, and short, making it worth another playthrough with all your gear. So I am giving the Thumb Culture Platinum Award.

Twisted Tower is an absolute triumph, bringing together a BioShock vibe with old-school shooting to make for an experience that’ll hook you in from start to end. Between the genuinely engaging narrative, the wonderful gunplay that excels through its wacky weaponry and varied enemies, and an unsettling world that’s a real treat to explore, it really has a lot to offer both fans of narrative-driven shooters and those who just appreciate a bit of old-school action. Sure, it has a few small issues, but they don’t stop Twisted Tower from being a wonderfully… well… twisted experience.

To put it bluntly, Twisted Tower isn’t anything special. I’ve played dozens of better, more original, and more distinctive boomer shooters. That doesn’t change the fact, however, that this is a very solid game that can be a lot of fun. The action is intense, dynamic, and has just the right amount of punch, and the story—despite its disappointing ending—is intriguing enough that you’ll follow it with genuine curiosity for most of the game. Twisted Tower may not go down in the history of the subgenre, but it certainly knows how to provide a few truly enjoyable hours of fun.

In my view, Twisted Tower certainly bears a resemblance to BioShock and even a bit to The Backrooms. Yet this game has its own identity. The mystery and build-up of suspense, combined with excellent storytelling and humour, make for an ideal mix. This relatively short game is perfect for a quick play, and a real standout indie title. With his first 3D game (all his previous games were 2D), Thomas Brush has immediately delivered a real gem.

Twisted Tower is a quality action FPS that will please anyone looking for a combination of BioShock Infinite and Five Nights at Freddy’s. It offers plenty of action, solid entertainment, and original weapons that many players will certainly appreciate.

The world of Twisted Tower is impressively vast, with so much to explore from one playthrough to the next. Its thematic and narrative depth is commendable too, though it could have pushed the envelope just a bit further on that front.
