Why play it

A fast and frantic arcade extravaganza with tons of action and gallons of blood! It's up to Count Bloodvayne and his vampire powers to rescue his BATS teammates from Scorpion Supreme and Sting's evil clutches.

Story and worldbuilding

Based on the coolest animated TV show that never was, BATS stars Count Bloodvayne and the rest of Bloodsucker Anti-Terror Squad as they battle Scorpion Supreme and the ruthless terrorist organization, STING! (Syndicate for Terror and Illegal Non-Government, voted the world’s #1 terrorist organization.) Did you ever want GI Joe with vampires? Well now you can have it, buddy! BATS is a throwback to the action sidescrollers of the 16-bit era, with a modern twist. It’s a fast-paced, arcade brawler-shooter-slasher that rewards precision play and pixel-perfect timing. Play like a pro or take your time running around killing terrorists, slicing off heads and sucking up blood at your own pace. It’s up to you! Either way, you’re gonna have a bloody good time. There are five hand-crafted levels of STING’s fortress for the player to explore. Each level is filled with dangerous traps, deadly hazards, and an endless supply of Scorp soldiers to slice and dice into bloody bits. As players progress through the levels they will collect blood droplets, which can be used to activate super deadly vampire powers, making the wholesale slaughter of disposable soldiers a breeze! But watch out, there’s still plenty of swinging saw blades, terrorist zombies, and electrocution chambers to navigate. And don’t forget the STING sauna!

BATS: Bloodsucker Anti-Terror Squad is fun. It has great humour, doesn't take itself too seriously, and has some great homages to several franchises all whilst cracking a joke or two at their expense. Its gameplay is fine, and I think with a little bit of TLC to tighten the controls and fixing of the blood drops, it would turn BATS from a good game to a great one.

Frantic and fun, BATS: Bloodsucker Anti-Terror Squad is an arcade platformer focused on intensity and violence. Despite its issues, mostly related to its short duration, this bloody and explosive adventure shows that good vampires not only exist but can also be unstoppable when united — just like the steadfast BATS squad.

B.A.T.S.: Bloodsucker Anti-Terror Squad is a fun game, but extremely limited. The joke behind the concept wears out very fast, but the gameplay sustains itself through its short duration, even if there's nothing else to do after finishing the campaign.

As such B.A.T.S. is a bit of a mixed bag. Its presentation is fantastic, with well-devised sprite work and a strong sense of humor throughout, and when the game does flow at the speed it needs it is an awful lot of fun for its short run time. However, those awkward design choices and more difficult technical issues do hold it back from reaching its full potential.

For fast-paced arcade-style 2D action, BATS: Bloodsucker Anti-Terror Squad offers a solid formula that provides a decent challenge.

There is a specific kind of public who will love BATS: Bloodsucking Anti-Terrorist Squad thanks to its challenge considering how popular speedrunning has been, and the same can be said for retro games enthusiasts. However, generally speaking, its repetitiveness along with its small content make it not as exciting as the great action title it could have been.

BATS is a basic 2D action game with some solid vampire puns. Not much to see here, but it's mostly alright.

A side-scrolling action platformer where you play as a member of a squad of vampires, ripping through stages and enemies on the way to tough boss fights? It makes for quite the elevator pitch...
