Why play it

Borderlands 3: Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck is a 2020 Shooter, Role-playing (RPG) game rated 7.0/10 from 1.1k ratings, with a main story of about 4h, available on Nintendo Switch, PC (Microsoft Windows), PlayStation 4, Xbox One.

Ready to say goodbye to sanity, Vault Hunter? Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck, the fourth campaign add-on for Borderlands 3, will send you on a savage and surreal journey into madness.

Story and worldbuilding

Brilliant scientist Patricia Tannis may have cracked one of the galaxy's greatest mysteries: what makes the Borderlands' psychos so uniformly deranged? She believes the answer lies with Vaulthalla, a mythical place that induces insanity in all who learn its true nature. Of course, your average psycho isn't going to peacefully sit still and share Vaulthalla's secrets, so the closest you can get to a willing participant is Krieg, a fellow Crimson Raider and the most badass psycho there is. Problem is, Krieg's not the best communicator, what with all his aggressive, barely coherent screaming. Using technology that lesser intellects couldn't possibly comprehend, Tannis is beaming you and your fellow Vault Hunters directly into Krieg's consciousness so you can discover Vaulthalla for yourself. You'll need to team up with both of Krieg's opposing personas—a raging murder machine and a calm inner voice—if you want any chance of surviving his twisted, meat-filled mindscapes and reaping Vaulthalla's rewards.

Borderlands 3: Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck is a bizarre odyssey through Kreig's cranium that holds one great boss battle but few other surprises.

Although it can feel slow-going at times, Borderlands 3: Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck benefits from its lore-heavy framework and a clear focus on one major character. If Gearbox has anything to say about it, this isn't the end of Borderlands 3's DLC, despite the fact that this is the final expansion of the first season pass. There's plenty of room for improvement if it is meant to be.

While it's one of the better stories in the franchise, the terrible mission design hobbles the DLC. This is not the DLC Borderlands 3 deserved to go out on.

“Borderlands 3: Psycho Krieg and the fantastic Fustercluck” may not be the longest DLC in the franchise but it still sticks true to what you’d expect for a Borderlands DLC. While the concept is very similar to past DLC’s of previous games from within the series, the underlying message about mental health, coping, the loss of a loved one, and depression make for excellent talking points between friends and families. I’m not sure if that was the original intention of the DLC but given the global pandemic we currently find ourselves in, I think it’s an appropriate method for gamers of all ages to self-reflect on how they’re holding up.

Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck is unfortunately more a fustercluck than it is fantastic.

The DLC's expansion on Borderlands' lore and storytelling is arguably noteworthy and shouldn't be dismissed. I'd say it's a chief reason to fork over money for this new addition.

Despite once again proving that the DLCs for Borderlands 2 were considerably better than those for B3, Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck is an excellent addition to close the season of downloadable content for B3 and its best expansion among the four of the Season Pass.

What makes Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck difficult to review is, the core game is obviously fantastic and the dialogue makes it fun, yet it really isn't that impressive of an expansion. Familiar locations and expected storytelling take away from the journey, as does the need to play so many things safe. It is fine as part of the season pass or an additional bonus adventure, it just struggles to make the journey worthwhile. At least when compared to the other expansions, which had more to say, do and experience than Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck offers.

“Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck” was by far a fun DLC. It brought back a few Borderlands 2 characters, including the “meat bicycle” man himself, Krieg, and the humor was nonstop. Gearbox has a wonderful talent for developing characterization through humor and dialogue and it continues to show in this DLC.

In the end the expansion offers more loot, more adventures, and a few hours of diversion; but for me was the least engaging and interesting of the four DLC offerings for the game.
