Why play it

Call of Duty: Warzone is a 2020 Shooter game rated 8.0/10 from 192 ratings, with a main story of about 24h, available on PC (Microsoft Windows), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S.

Call of Duty: Warzone is a free-to-play battle royale first-person shooter set in the Call of Duty universe. Up to 150 players parachute onto a large map, scavenge weapons and equipment, and fight to be the last squad standing as the playable area shrinks. The game features an in-game currency system for purchasing loadout drops and other tactical items, as well as a unique respawn mechanic called the Gulag, where eliminated players can fight for a second chance. Originally released as a companion to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019), the game was later integrated with Black Ops Cold War and Vanguard content before its servers were shut down in September 2023, succeeded by a 2022 reboot also titled Warzone.

Story and worldbuilding

In 2020, the city of Verdansk falls under siege after terrorists Khaled Al-Asad and Victor Zakhaev orchestrate a devastating attack that floods the region with toxic gas. The Armistice, a joint coalition of Russian and NATO operators formed to maintain order, fractures under the chaos, leaving former allies to fight one another for survival amid the spreading contamination. Task Force 141, led by Captain John Price, takes up the mission of tracking down Zakhaev before he can carry out his ultimate plan: the launch of a nuclear missile.

Call of Duty: Warzone's beta remains thoroughly enjoyable even in spite of the serious concessions to depth made in the name of instant gratification.

Warzone trades the complexity and tension of other battle royale games for streamlined, constant action with some great new twists – and it works

Listen: Warzone is, like its skull-masked, kevlar-tucking “operators”, entirely solid. It bloody well should be, given its pedigree. But there is remarkably little interesting here – aside from flourishes like the sinister gulag section – to command our attention.

The trappings of greatness exist in the current form of Warzone. Area 99 can be a bit bland, but the intensity of it can be fun. The balance Raven has discovered in the Black Ops 6 armory is fantastic, a surprising beginning for a new integration. Holding back the package is the menagerie of fixes necessary and slower pace, meaning we'll need to wait for a few improvements before the game truly explodes.

Warzone silences all skeptics who gave battle-royale by declining genre. Infinity Ward introduces few but winning innovations that make their product perhaps one of the most complete on the market. Malloppo and Battle-Royale deserve two separate talks, but if we see the first as a simple extension of the second and not as a central element, Warzone reaches an evaluation close to perfection. Pay-to-win element as nonexistent as the genre has accustomed us.
