Why play it

A story-driven platformer metroidvania with a touch of RPG and tons of humor! Made in 2.5D, with beautiful hand-drawn-looking backgrounds crowded with funny creatures. Join Rufus, the clunky hero with broom and bucket, on a journey full of surprises through a bizarre realm.

Story and worldbuilding

In a village far, far away, a dull peasant named Rufus was living an ordinary life. The boss of the house was his wife, Brunilde, a boisterously smart and funny woman that you wouldn’t exactly call “pretty”. Life was nice and happy in the village, until one day, awakened by some magical mistake, the Evil One started to spread his minions around town, performing hideous acts against the people. The worst of which was the kidnapping of Brunilde. She was torn from Rufus’ hands and put in a prison at the Evil One’s castle. Transformed into a blondie duck-faced doll girl, she now spends all her time staring at herself in a small handheld mirror. Determined to win her back, Rufus made a helmet out of a bucket and picked a broom as a weapon. Everybody now calls him the CLUNKY HERO, but he might be the only hope to defeat the evil one that no one wants to call by name. Rufus is now on his journey to save his wife and the whole village!

Clunky Hero is a fun little metroidvania that takes jabs at one of the most overdone character stories and gives an experience full of charm and humor. However, the game does have a hitbox issue that makes the combat feel clunky and rigid and many of the jokes come across as juvenile and unfunny.

Clunky Hero is a MetroidVania title that manages to agree with everyone about its mediocrity. It is not a video game that stands out in a positive sense, but neither does it stand out in a negative sense. It is an enjoyable title that probably would have shined a little brighter with more thoughtful dialogue and a more simplified gameplay system regarding exploration.

In all honesty, I think the developers really hampered themselves on this one. They should have sent out the PC version to reviewers in the first place. Overall, I love the game on PC. But I have to review the copy I was given, and the Switch port just isn’t good.

Clunky Hero is a very humble adventure that needs more polishment to be considered a really pleasant and interesting experience. [The developers] did not pay enough attention to its gameplay, level design and audio to make the general presentation better, which ends up making the game more Clunky than Hero.

Clunky Hero can be something you pick up for a good chuckle and a little bit of platform adventuring, but you'll soon find the game to be bland and tasteless.

With so many Metroidvania games on the market, Clunky Hero will be drowned out by a multitude of far superior titles. Even if it has its moments, there is absolutely nothing that makes it stand out against similar, better-crafted titles like Hollow Knight or Monster Sanctuary. If anything, it’s worth picking up for a cheap laugh due to its lack of purpose.

An unfortunately spot-on title for this pretty generic and troubled platformer

It’s a tonal hodgepodge, almost completely unfunny in every attempt, but a half-decent metroidvania structure is Clunky Hero’s saving grace. Don’t expect to find magic in this fantasy land, but you can enjoy the game for how it plays.

Clunky Hero is a title that finds its greatest strength in its bold identity. Despite a derivative and flawed play structure, Chaosmonger Studio's title is solid and thoughtfully designed, satisfying and challenging. Admittedly, in some cases even due to the artifice related to the aforementioned approximation, but that's okay. To whom do we recommend it? Everyone, even those who are not fans of the genre, because of the competitive price at which it is sold and the charisma with which the product is imbued.

Clunky Hero is still in its early stages, which naturally comes with its fair share of unresolved bugs. The developers need to learn from these and listen closely to their community—which, by the way, they are doing, and for that they deserve credit. Still, I see potential in the game, though there’s still a lot of work to be done before it truly shines. This quirky Metroidvania, brimming with humor, stands out among the other titles in your library thanks to its witty oddity, and if you’re a fan of games like this, you’ll get a lot of bang for your buck.
