Why play it

In a grim dystopian future, where mankind has scattered across the galaxy and the human society has split into two distinct classes, you are a poor stateless outcast forced to live off scraps from derelict alien stations and ships in the outer space. A fabled alien derelict ship somewhere within the Deep Sky sector of space is your voucher for a citizenship and a promise of cozy life on a hospitable planet. Experience Deep Sky Derelicts in its definitive edition, which brings together the base game and its two DLC, New Prospects and Station Life. Both adding new features, content, areas, gameplay mechanics and much more!

I went into Deep Sky Derelicts with the knowledge of it being the company’s second title, I was expecting a cookie-cutter dungeon looter within a saturated market populated by the likes of Torchlight, Diablo, Borderlands, and many other more well-known franchises. However, Deep Sky Derelicts goes toe-to-toe with the AAA games within this genre, it offered deep levels of customisation, deck building, an interesting dungeon exploration method, and a vast array of freedom, just falling a tad bit short with some polishing needed and more end-game content. That being said, Deep Sky Derelicts will be a title I will not forget about, but a game I hold others in comparison to, despite the minor gripes I had with it.

Deep Sky Derelicts adds a fresh take on the Rogue-Like Turn-Based RPG with a unique combat system and beautiful comic book aesthetic. Deep Sky Derelicts: Definitive Edition is currently on sale for £10.83 on the Steam Store. Given the 20-hour main campaign along with the two additional DLCs, (New Prospects and Station Life) which add more planets, classes, and environments to explore and loot, you get extraordinary value for your money!

Deep Sky Derelicts is a flawed roguelike dungeon crawler, but its positives still manage to slightly outweigh its negatives. With a bit of patience, you’ll be eventually greeted to complex yet enjoyable combat and progression systems, as well as a lot of replayability due to the randomly generated dungeons.

Deep Sky Derelicts: Definitive Edition combines perfectly with the Nintendo Switch portable mode, allowing you to play the game slowly on the road or before going to bed. This is an interesting and atmospheric project for fans of turn-based RPGs, but the absence of any striking features in the visual design and the sterile plot cause a sense of secondariness.

A good mix between exploration with roguelike elements, and turn-based RPG when it comes to combat, the game allows for a great degree of character customization and a good level of freedom. At the same time, some decisions are difficult to understand, such as the consumption of resources, some lack of orientation and too much information on the screen at once. Dedicated players will find a lot to enjoy here, but there's a certain effort to make.

Scavenge the galaxy, loot derelicts and level up your team to tackle bigger and nastier enemies.

While the learning curve in Deep Sky Derelicts is very steep, as I began to really understand how the systems work I enjoyed it more and more. There's a lot of replay value here with the different classes and the ships being procedurally generated, and a greater understanding of the mechanics helped me appreciate how well they all work together. If you enjoy deep RPGs in sci-fi settings, Deep Sky Derelicts is worth the effort.

The Definitive Edition of Deep Sky Derelicts doesn't add much to the base game, which remains solid and enjoyable, but very ripetitive. Consider it only if you don't mind repetition.

While it's extremely reductive to use comparisons to other games to describe new ones since it quickly paints a picture it is convenient...

A gorgeous comic book aesthetic and unique premise helps to alleviate Deep Sky Derelicts’ rudimentary and uneven card-based RPG tactics.
