Why play it

Fearmonium is a psychedelic action-platformer where suspense intertwines with humor. Start the game as the usual unpleasant memory and, reincarnate into a real phobia by breaking through the most hidden corners of consciousness of Jimmy.

Story and worldbuilding

The whole game will unfold in the inner world of a boy who once saw several clowns at a fair. Their images secured by support of Depression are making their way into the depths of his consciousness through the nightmare, meeting Jimmy’s memories on their way, anxieties and bright images. Will the clowns be able to supplant all objective fears of Jimmy and take the place of his main horror?

Fearmonium is a very addictive, moderately long metroidvania that will draw you in with an interesting plot and catchy aesthetics, both visual and audio.

The floaty controls and repetitive music aside, I thought this was a decent dip in the metroidvania arena. Fearmonium is a creepy little romp that’s worth a few days of amusement and some further discussion, but it lives and dies by its very notion. If you seek greater meaning of the trauma and horrors, then you’ll remember it far longer. While it might disturb and captivate you in the moment, it could fade when you walk away from your console.

Fearmonium is a Metroidvania with a pretty heavy theme. The depressing themes in combination with the gloomy environments are not for everyone. It might even put off those who are interested. On the other hand, it has become a very original game in the genre that I would like to recommend to everyone without too many caveats. Even if you have a phobia of clowns.

Fearmonium had all the credentials to deal with such a sensitive topic as phobia and depression in a sharp and interesting manner. Unfortunately, the reality of the facts is quite different, and it proposes an imprecise and botched title, which sees in its artistic compartment its only lifeline.

Fearmonium has a basic idea based on valid psychology, however, the result on a gaming level is insufficient, bringing it closer to what a browser game would have been 15 or more years ago.

At first glance, Fearmonium may seem like a title that will resemble the action-packed Cuphead. Unfortunately, this is not the case and the title under review plays with a different style. Still, it is a title worth playing and getting to know the story of a depressed, anxious little boy trying to get out of it. You can get this title on Steam for €10.79.
