Green Hell

Aside from the plot, I’d say most of what held my attention about Green Hell was how dazzlingly beautiful and technically impressive it was, but the more traditional survival elements are all solid enough that I look forward to playing more.

Green Hell is a brutally tough, deep and satisfying open-world survival sim. It suffers from the same inherent repetition and often infuriating difficulty as most other examples of its genre, but these are problems offset here by satisfying crafting and construction systems, clever smartwatch and body inspection elements and a story mode that easily trumps the vast majority of offerings we've come across in a survival sim. If you can make peace with the Switch's graphical downgrade, missing multiplayer aspect and some minor control issues, what's here is sure to satiate any cravings you may have for some seriously tough survival sim shenanigans.

Final look at Green Hell can be summarized as "it's fine". Building is not the best. Story requires your full attention and some thinking on your own. Survival is frustrating right up until you discover soup economics and combat is flawed. But it's fine. It's enjoyable, detailed, frustrating and still underdeveloped. But it's fine.

If you have played the likes of Subnautica and The Forest, Green Hell: Spirits of Amazonia is undeniably worth checking out. As for existing Green Hell players, it would be a complete no-brainer to miss out on this freebie. While the story can be a bit of a mixed bag when compared to the original campaign, the great sense of exploration and survivability still remains intact at its core. Green Hell is the best survival game I've played since The Long Dark. It respects your time, doesn't treat you like an idiot, and expects you to learn from your mistakes.

Green Hell is a survival game set in the Amazon jungle. You must meet with a tribe and find clues to remember why you've come to them. What will you uncover as you stalk through the South American jungle?

Green Hell is a game that’s going to be great once the developers have maggots eat away all the infected bits and patch the wounds in a lovely update-lined bandage. It just isn’t there yet, and I’m somewhat sad I’ve had my experience soured before it got there.

Green Hell is off the charts; possibly the best survival simulator ever made, with the best marriage of an incredible story and game play style.
