Why play it

Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a story-driven open-world RPG that immerses you in an epic adventure in the Holy Roman Empire. Avenge your parents' death as you battle invading forces, go on game-changing quests, and make influential choices. Explore majestic castles, deep forests, thriving villages and countless other realistic settings in medieval Bohemia!

Story and worldbuilding

Bohemia – located in the heart of Europe, the region is rich in culture, silver, and sprawling castles. The death of its beloved ruler, Emperor Charles IV, has plunged the kingdom into dark times: war, corruption, and discord are tearing this jewel of the Holy Roman Empire apart. One of Charles' sons, Wenceslas, has inherited the crown. Unlike his father, Wenceslas is a naive, self-indulgent, unambitious monarch. His half-brother and King of Hungary, Sigismund the Red Fox, senses weakness in Wenceslas. Feigning good will, Sigismund travels to Bohemia and kidnaps his half-brother. With no king on the throne, Sigismund is now free to plunder Bohemia and seize its riches. In the midst of this chaos, you're Henry, the son of a blacksmith. Your peaceful life is shattered when a mercenary raid, ordered by King Sigismund himself, burns your village to the ground. By bittersweet fortune, you are one of the few survivors of this massacre. Without a home, family, or future you end up in the service of Lord Radzig Kobyla, who is forming a resistance against the invasion. Fate drags you into this bloody conflict and shoves you into a raging civil war, where you help fight for the future of Bohemia. Redeem your past and emerge a hero!

If you give yourself over to Warhorse's muddy opus, it will reward you with a hundred hours of grueling and enjoyable trial and error. It's buggy and rough around the edges on Switch, but Kingdom Come Deliverance is a singular RPG experience. The pacing and constant juggling of mechanics is not for everyone, but invest the time and you'll experience an engrossing, grounded adventure.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance is bettered by its sequel in every way imaginable, and while the enhanced offering does improve the technical side, it also highlights everything else where Henry's second adventure soars. It's not a bad game, but this release is for the fans only.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance is an open-world immersive world action RPG. You can go anywhere. You can make a lot of choices in terms of what your character will do. There are so many options and choices, in fact, that it becomes intoxicated with how immersive it is and forgets to be fun to play.

I would recommend this game to players who love open world RPGs and are looking for more of a challenge. There is also a really awesome online community surrounding this game; mainly helpful tips and tricks as well as fun and meaningful discussions amongst players.

Let me be clear that I laud Saber Interactive for doing the impossible and managing to make a game like Kingdom Come: Deliverance run on the Switch in the first place. Sadly, just because they could, it doesn’t mean they should have done so. This game is not a good fit for the platform, be it for its excessive emphasis on immersion and realism, or the sheer amount of setbacks and limitations which had to be taken in order to make it run (poorly) on the console in the first place.

Despite the long time that has elapsed between the first release and this Switch port, Kingdom Come Deliverance Royal Edition fails to align with the excellent quality of most of Saber Interactive's previous works on Switch.

Kingdom Come Deliverance is an incredibly ambitious game for sure. It is not for everyone and its quirks surely will get under some players’ skins, especially those who are looking for more fantastical adventuring such as The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim – which is also on Switch, I’ll be damned! Then again, if your expectations are in check, and they should be at this point nearly 7 years after the fact, you’ll find a nifty little gem with this one.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a great game hindered by the outdated hardware it fights against. Saber has done its best to port the title on the Switch and maintain a serviceable graphical fidelity. While Kingdom Come features a unique story, setting, and believable characters, it is wrapped within a mixed technical presentation that will be sure to test your patience.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance - Royal Edition comes to Nintendo Switch in what for many was an impossible port and thanks to Saber Interactive it has been proven that this was not the case. An open world RPG with a medieval theme and a realistic tone awaits you - complex and demanding - that will delight lovers of the deepest RPGs, as long as they understand the technical concessions granted to make this version possible.
