Story and worldbuilding

Defiance continues from where Soul Reaver 2 ended. In Soul Reaver 2, Kain saved Raziel's life by drawing the Soul Reaver from him – Raziel was meant to enter the blade and become its soul-devouring spectral half. This causes a paradox that changes time for the worse and separates Kain and Raziel. Kain's part of the game follows him seeking Moebius the Time Streamer, a time-travelling mystic, for answers to where Raziel is, how he has changed time, and later following a lead Moebius gives him to explore a Vampire citadel. During his quest, Kain finds and completes a broken talisman of a Vampire construct known as the Balance Emblem. Kain discovers murals during his quest, dictating an ancient war between the first races to inhabit Nosgoth, the Ancient vampires and the Hylden. After sealing the Hylden in an alternate dimension using the Pillars of Nosgoth, the Hylden cursed the Ancients with bloodthirst, sterility and immortality, turning them into the first Vampires. Kain discovers from the murals that it was prophesied that both races would have a champion arise – a Vampire champion wielding the Soul Reaver, and a Hylden champion wielding a flaming sword. Because he possesses the material Soul Reaver depicted, Kain comes to believe he is the prophesied Vampire champion. The outcome of the battle between the two champions remains ambiguous.

Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered is clearly aimed at fans, offering a respectful remaster that makes the original easier to enjoy today. Its story still shines, but the repetitive combat and some dated design choices make the passage of time hard to ignore.

Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered is more than the return of a beloved classic; it marks the long-awaited revival of one of gaming’s most ambitious, mature, and narratively accomplished franchises. More than two decades after its original release, Defiance remains a striking reminder of what set Legacy of Kain apart from many of its contemporaries. Its intricate narrative, richly realised cast, and uniquely oppressive vision of Nosgoth continue to resonate, while the improvements introduced in this remaster make the experience significantly more accessible to modern audiences. The revised camera system, refined controls, enhanced presentation, and wealth of archival material collectively strengthen the package, without compromising the identity of the original work. Not every aspect has aged gracefully. The absence of modern navigational aids can, at times, make progression feel unnecessarily opaque, while parts of the archival bonus content remain locked behind premium editions. These shortcomings, however, are ultimately minor when weighed against the significance of what has been preserved here. More than twenty years later, the story of Kain and Raziel remains one of the most compelling and thematically ambitious narratives the medium has produced. Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered does more than revisit a classic; it reaffirms its place among gaming’s most important storytelling achievements. Above all, it serves as a timely reminder that few fantasy worlds have ever felt as rich, as distinctive, or as enduring as Nosgoth.

Overall, Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered is a faithful and visually improved return to a cult classic that shines because of its storytelling and atmosphere rather than its gameplay. It is a remaster made for fans first, not a reinvention for a new generation.

Legacy of Kain: Defiance HD Remaster does a pretty good job of bringing this classic game into the modern gaming landscape visually. Even today, the story remains captivating, the dialogue is cleverly written and beautifully staged, the art style is unparalleled, and the overall, distinctive atmosphere of the world of Nosgoth allows you to fully immerse yourself in the experience. The gameplay innovation of the freely movable camera confidently sweeps aside the sharpest criticism of the original’s gameplay. Nevertheless, one can’t shake the feeling that more could have been done visually here, just as in the remasters of Soul Reaver 1 and 2, and that this was once again merely a trial balloon released to gauge today’s gamers’ general interest in the series. Accordingly, I hope this was enough to convince them to treat us to a proper, modern sequel in the future. That said, the overall gameplay and level design feel genuinely outdated in several areas these days. So I’d be rather skeptical about whether the remaster will be able to attract new fans… For connoisseurs and fans of the series, however, it comes highly recommended.

If it hasn’t become abundantly clear by now, I adore the Soul Reaver games. With it’s stunning story, amazing writing and some of the most phenomenal and iconic voice acting and musical score in videogaming, these games - especially as a whole - are masterpieces of the medium that are as much art as they are entertainment. And having them all available om modern hardware in a more beautiful package is exactly what I’ve waited years for. Legacy of Kain Defiance Remastered rounds out the Soul Reaver saga with a gorgeous, layered package that is a must have for every collection.

On paper, Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered, much like every title in the franchise, doesn’t seem too special. Average gameplay is once again a plague on the stronger aspects, but it all just works together and presents an honestly outstanding title that is better than the sum of its parts. Some excellent quality of life changes, extra content to dive into, and a flawless framerate with beautiful HD textures manage to edge out some of the nastier aspects of this remaster, including its propensity to crash towards the later stages of the game. I now wait with bated breath for Blood Omen 1 and 2 to get equally as tasty remasters. Vae Victus.

Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered will especially delight longtime fans of the series who want to revisit the dark story of Nosgoth with a more modern visual style and a significantly improved camera system. Thanks to its captivating atmosphere, dialogue, and pair of antiheroes, it can also draw in newcomers—though they should be aware that the game design and combat system simply belong to a different era. So if you’re looking for a gothic, dark action-adventure game with an emphasis on story and don’t mind older-style mechanics, you can’t go wrong with Defiance. But if you’re expecting a modern pace, seamless player guidance, and varied combat, you probably won’t be entirely thrilled by this trip down memory lane.
