Metal Unit is a game that could have risen with the sun and reaped the rewards. Unfortunately, the game’s absurdly generic story, controls that are unfriendly to keyboard players, and nerve-grating music do more harm than good. However, its strengths remain: great action, weapon combinations, rogue-lite elements, accessible pixel art, and a constant urge to push forward from one mission to the next.

Metal Unit is an indie title with a great deal of love put into it, and it’s easy to tell. However, there are glaring issues that need to be addressed and dealt with swiftly for longevity. I didn’t hate playing it, but I wish there was fine tuning in some areas.

Out of the gate, while perhaps holding me back from the action a tad too long, I'll at least give Metal Unit credit for going all in on trying to get its story going...

Diving deeper and deeper into the customization elements of Metal Unit makes its tight action-packed gameplay thoroughly enjoyable.

I think I’ve had my fill of Metal Unit now with just over twenty hours in it. It’s by no means a classic. It’s not something you would run to your friends to recommend. It’s a game you can enjoy quietly by yourself, as you hack-and-slash your way through run after run, laughing off terrible plot moments and feeling satisfied.

With its anime-trope-filled story, and starkly unbalanced combat and upgrades, Metal Unit is a passable roguelite in a genre where there are far better options.

Metal Unit focuses on few concepts to offer a good action and platform game. It is very interesting to use different equipment in devastating combinations, and part of the fun is to test and find unique synergies. The title has charming 16-bit looks and the roguelite elements helps bring variety, but the limited diversity of stages and unbalanced elements compromise the experience. In the end, Metal Unit offers uncomplicated fun.
