Initially, Neon City Riders is a delight, sporting great pixel artwork, fun characters, and lively music. But after a few hours the experience wears thin, as its attractive world starts to feel empty and its quest disengaging.

Neon City Riders promises an epic open-world action-adventure set in a vibrant '80s sci-fi world, but its action and writing are far too flat and clunky to back up its initial promise. It looks and sounds a treat in places, but lacklustre execution makes for a punishing, repetitive and confounding experience. Pull away that admittedly amazing pixel-heavy packaging and you've got a game that fails to make a lasting impression in any meaningful manner.

Neon City Riders is a remarkable game full of small tributes to the 90s, which will delight veteran players. Without being excellent, it is more than enough to give us 12-15 hours of fun.

Neon City Riders is a modern reinterpretation of the classic The Legend of Zelda with its own features and unusual setting. The high level of difficulty and challenging situations along with a strong emphasis on exploration can scare most players, but this is one of the most notable projects in its genre, especially if you are the lucky owner of the Nintendo Switch.

Neon City Riders is a title that, on the surface, seems content to settle into the indie niche of 80s aesthetic. However, beyond that veneer is a game that carries ambitions that aim to set itself apart from its contemporaries. These ambitions don’t always pan out — and I occasionally came across some glaring flaws in its gameplay, UI, and optimization. One can’t help but wonder if more time in the oven would have resulted in a more cohesive product?

Neon City Riders is an independent game that tries to use nostalgia to get your attention. The history, visual and sound presentation are spoiled by poor level design, boring gameplay and terrible performance on PlayStation 4.

Neon City Riders achieves outstanding art direction and animations that match challenging gameplay and well-designed boss battles. This indie takes inspiration from metroidvania installations, but sometimes fails to maintain the interest in exploration. However, combined with good platform puzzles and gameplay, it stands as an attractive experience.

Neon City Riders is a beautifully retro game, but certain elements feel like they were rushed and not fully developed.

Neon City Riders is a great first step for Mecha Studios, surely it did need some technical polish but with all the great things that the game is offering such as the gorgeous pixel art, clever puzzles, epic boss fights and satisfying challenge, how can you not overlook it's missteps?
