Why play it

Profane is a 3D boss rush Bullet Hell based on time. This means that you have to face every Boss and defeat them before your time runs out! Time is money and health, so acquiring abilities or being damaged will reduce your remaining combat time. You better watch out! Along your path, you will unlock over 40 unique abilities by defeating bosses. Before each battle you will be able to customise your ability loadouts to optimize your playstyle and discover powerful combos! In Profane you embody Talaal, the last of God’s seven masks. Talaal finds you just in time to fight against her siblings, that hunt her to absorb the power within the mask. You are now trapped, fighting a war that is not your own, a cycle that seems impossible to break. If you enjoy frantic experiences and hard challenges, prepare to be tested! Challenge other players and reach the top of the leaderboards!

Story and worldbuilding

An archaeologist specialized in the Seven Heralds story, has discovered an ancient map that leads her to the ruins where he may find one of the masks of the story. Digging among the rubble, she finds the seventh mask, Talaal. Before she can even notice, the mask blasts a cyan light, projecting into her face, possessing her. An explosion of light with the same color floods the temple reaching the forest. Talaal, the embodiment of Pride, uses the human as it’s vessel to be able to use its immense power. The story will be seen from her perspective, her taken freedom, and her sentence of being condemned to bring life to who now rules her.

Profane is not my typical pick of a game, but it has to be said that there is a lot of fun to be had by changing it up. As a strategic bullet-hell twin-stick-shooter, this game looks great and offers a lot of bang for your buck. 10 bosses, 40 power-ups, and some tactical gameplay make this a solid title for those who adore this unforgiving genre.

Profane is a devastatingly frantic boss rush bullet-hell twin-stick experience that looks and plays nice on the Nintendo Switch. While you lose the Twitch and Mixer integration that the PC release has, it still includes the rogue-lite challenge mode, leaderboards, and daily challenges to keep you returning for additional runs. The timer-based currency and health system are unique, but some may have a hard time getting past the opening encounter in story mode. Thankfully, the arena mode lets you select from any of the bosses and mess around with all of the abilities already unlocked.

Profane is definitely a great game to play. It’s hard and you’ll get mad, but each boss is oh so satisfying to take down. Even the first time taking down the first phase of a boss feels good. So what are you waiting for? Jump in and git gud.

I would not recommend Profane to most of my friends who have terrible, terrible hand coordination skills, but I would recommend this to a few of them who like a challenge. I just wish they had bonus items that will increase the time limit, which will make it more convenient but still challenging to play.

It is a rough diamond that is in need of some refining and shining, but still provides a good bullet hell experience.
