Spellcaster University has a lot of good ideas on display, which honestly might be its biggest issue. A management sim, wrapped with a card game, structured like a rogue-like, is a lot of concepts that need to work together, and they often don’t. The management sim is the best part of this, ass who has never wanted to run a magical school, but the card mechanic and the rogue-like at times feel needed, and honestly, a hampering to the core management mechanic at the center.
Read full review ↗With intuitive controller optimization, readable UI, and an addictive gameplay loop, Spellcaster University is one of the most accessible management sims available on console right now. The game’s whimsical charm and deep decision-making make it perfect for both short bursts and long magical marathons.
Read full review ↗In summary, I mostly enjoyed Spellcaster University. The random nature of the cards dealt meant that each “run” felt fresh enough to keep me playing. That said, there is only so much to do before you end up idling the game until enough money or magic has been saved in order to buy new cards. The events do alleviate the tedium when they appear, and despite the relative simplicity of the game, it was still fun to start a new university and see if I could improve upon my previous one. So, that’s why the console version of Spellcaster University is getting a Thumb Culture Silver Award!
Read full review ↗Spellcaster University is a fantastic deck-building, roguelite simulation. The text is a little small for the handheld Nintendo Switch screen, and the night cycle is a little dark, which means you miss out on the hilarious actions of the students. However, the more I played, the more I enjoyed Spellcaster University. With the additional challenges and the random nature of the cards, there is plenty of replay value, and I’m looking forward to furthering my studies and aiming to graduate as Archmage!
Read full review ↗A cute and quirky management sim with lots of character. Lacks some polishing but is quite well done otherwise.
Read full review ↗If you love building and tinkering your creations to perfection and have no problem spending hours on it, then Spellcaster University is tailor-made for you. Fans of the wizarding education system (I guess it doesn't matter which universe) will be equally excited to try out what it's like to sit in Dumbledore's chair at Spellcaster University. The purchase price of around €20 is a bit high due to the simplicity of the game, but the graphics are compensated by the great gameplay, which simply draws you in and immerses you.
Read full review ↗Spellcaster University is refreshing with some very good ideas. The game, which mixes deckbuilding with management, all under a layer of light fantasy, is very catchy and can be played on long sessions of 3-4 hours as much as in "aperitif game" of a few minutes when you want to have fun.
Read full review ↗Hailed by players as a Hogwarts simulator, Spellcaster University mixes elements from different genres to create a truly unique gaming experience. Can you build a school to train the best mages of our time and finally defeat the Lord of Evil?
Read full review ↗An economic strategy with card game mechanics should not work, Spellcaster University proves otherwise. Sneaky Yak Studio created an adorable and simply fun game, which shows what would happen if Dumbledore had a problem with gambling. Bear in mind, however, that unless one activates any of the gameplay modifiers before starting the session, Spellcaster University lacks any challenge which may lead to it becoming repetitive during longer sessions.
