All in all, you can cleave your way through Story of a Gladiator in just a handful of hours, but it's reasonably rewarding while it lasts. Enter the arena with tempered expectations, and you'll find a basic but moreish brawler.

Story of a Gladiator offers tight combat mechanics and varied beat 'em up gameplay, but difficulty spikes from level to level introduce a massive grind for upgrades.

Brain Seal Limited has done a great job of recreating the brutal environment and high energy that came with all the killing in the arena. An in-depth skill tree and equipment selection enables you to choose the game style that suits your approach. Do I recommend this? Yes, so buy it here! Fun, fast-paced, bloody action awaits anyone who wishes to become a champion. Start from nothing, wow the crowds and become the next big thing.

Story of a Gladiator is a simple arena game, where you can fight as a gladiator against others for the coin and glory. The game is quite long, repeatable, and the art style is nice to the eye at first, but ultimately too simple and unappealing.

Story of a Gladiator is an action beat'em up from Brain Seal Entertainment that puts the player in the boots of a gladiator that has lost everything. While the title "Story of a Gladiator" may be a misnomer as the actual story is short, with no real impact on much of what you do, Story of a Gladiator manages to pull off a fun action title that will keep players invested for several hours as they bash, slice, and skewer their way to the top.

Story of a Gladiator is definitely one of the best indie games I’ve played in 2019. While the premise sounds simple and repetitive, the execution gives it depth: the upgradeable equipment (armor, weaponry, shield), the plethora of skills, the use of amulet, pets, foods; Story of a Gladiator is a simple, yet complex game that’s easy to pick up and play. I highly recommend this game.

The pain of the grind, with little to show in return, throws this release to the lions

Story of a Gladiator might not be remembered like the classics it was inspired by but it’s a pretty good beat-’em-up in its own right. The combat is smooth and responsive and it’s fun to level up your character and use new weapons and abilities to smash apart enemy gladiators. It does get to be a bit grindy at times and has some visual hiccups but if you can look past that you’ll enjoy this trip to the arena.

An otherwise robust combat system is summarily undone by dunderheaded AI, repetitive grinding, a lack of modes and uneven presentation. We've wanted to return to Ancient Rome for years now on PS4, but not like this.
