A fictional world that's full of exoticism. This is a romance adventure game for women that depicts rich romantic relationships that involve the character's countries, along with conflicts and beliefs.

Story and worldbuilding

A land where women are scarce due to a fatal disease. Naala, a girl who lives in the southern country Ruse, lost her only blood relative at a young age when her mother was stolen away by the Northern country Nasula. The one who supported her was her adored "older brother" and childhood friend Olli, who was to be the next king. Several years after that nightmarish night, Naala has been adopted by the royal family, and had begun passing her days peacefully as Olli's fiancé. The Crimson Flower that Divides: Lunar Coupling is a compelling, albeit flawed, otome.

Though it’s not necessarily my favorite otome to date, The Crimson Flower that Divides: Lunar Coupling is an excellent piece of work in terms of appreciation and dedication to the story and the player. The sheer amount of choices and nuanced results can lead to hours upon hours of replay, and the locked endings force a player who wants to find out more to actually walk the path before arriving at the destination.

The Crimson Flower That Divides: Lunar Coupling is a game that puts its characters through hell and features a localization fraught with issues, but its heroine is absolutely wonderful.

The Crimson Flower that Divides: Lunar Coupling is an interesting otome game that I would praise for its more mature plot, but it shows signs of having aged considerably from its original 2012 release. The issue with story branches happening inside other routes made the experience confusing due to the lack of a flowchart. Further, when it came to specific love interests, the chapter names made navigating the routes a chore. A bit more quality assurance would have also gone a long way to remedy some of the typos.

The Crimson Flower that Divides: Lunar Coupling is an otome visual novel that's worth it for the genre fans but the English translation is lacking. The social and political context of the plot is enticing and brings up relevant discussions on power and sexism that stand out from any apparent romanticization of affect in a morally questionable context. We hope HuneX can fix these issues and work for the next games to have more care in translation quality as this is an essential element of the genre.
