For what it’s worth, Trailmakers does a lot of good for the building genre and challenges those to step into the galaxy of flux with open arms. For those like me, Trailmakers is a decent entry point and dolls out a bunch of modes to provide variety to make this building simulator stand on its’ own. The game is worth checking out for that tinker itch to scratch.

Despite an attempt to add context and colour to the world, the best bit of Trailmakers: Pioneers is still the building.

Trailmakers: Pioneers brings exciting ideas into a game that is built around a fun and functional core, but the systems around it are lacking any staying power. Although I had an absolute blast building my heart away, I wanted more from the campaign and combat, and this was enough to unfortunately detract from my overall experience significantly.

Despite a hugely flawed single-player campaign and some control issues, Trailmakers succeeds commendably with the Lego-style vehicle building and online template sharing. Get stuck into the Rally mode and enjoy modding your vehicles to win races, then compete online in the sandbox modes and you'll have lots of fun.

Trailmakers is right on the cusp of being something great.
