Why play it

Set in a far corner of space, Valfaris is a heavy metal infused 2D action-platformer and the next game from the team behind Unity Awards finalist, Slain: Back From Hell. Brutal combat. Deadly enemies. Stunning pixel art. Savage soundtrack. Get ready to rip the galaxy a new wormhole.

Story and worldbuilding

"After mysteriously vanishing from galactic charts, the fortress of Valfaris has suddenly reappeared in the orbit of a dying sun. Once a self-contained paradise, the grandiose citadel now plays host to an ever-growing darkness. Therion, a fearless and proud son of Valfaris, returns to his home to uncover the truth of its doomed fate and to challenge the arcane evil at its very heart."

Valfaris doesn’t do anything noteworthily new, but the hectic, intense, satisfying experience it offers shouldn’t pass you by.

Overall, Valfaris is a much better game than its predecessor, introducing new systems and ideas to help keep its action-platformer formula engaging and interesting.

Valfaris is a dark, mean sci-fi trek through a corrupted landscape that can only be cleansed through fire.

Slain was nice, but not mature in my opinion. A graphic display that rode on the retro wave. However, the makers have taken the criticism to heart. The big hit is not VALFARIS. With Axiom Verge, Blazing Chrome, Gunlord & Co. there is also a lot of strong competition. Nevertheless, accompanied by metal rhythms, it is fun to chop up opponents. There is still frustration, but unlike Slain you have the feeling that you have failed yourself. I can recommend the title to fans of the genre. Everyone else prefers to play rehearsal first.

Valfaris is a superb action-platformer filled with violence, a killer soundtrack, and some gorgeously grotesque pixel art.

This is something Valfaris lacks, and I wish more indie developers understood when making these games that I very much want to play, I just lose interest in far too soon.

Valfaris is beautiful to see and fun to play. A title that sprays metal from every pore and that will immediately enter the hearts of fans thanks to an artistic section from hands in hair, with detailed, charismatic and original settings. Musically speaking, the soundtrack, created by Curt Victor Braynt, alone could be worth the price of the ticket. If to all this we add a gameplay fun like few other things, with the right depth and the right adaptability we are faced with a very clear situation: Valfaris is one of those video games to play during 2019, whatever it costs.

Valfaris is tough and ruthless, reminiscent of games from three decades ago, but it's also incredibly fun and successful. Steel Mantis has filled the gap left by Turrican, Contra, and similar games, providing a solid and stimulating experience for nostalgic players and those seeking a challenging and entertaining game.

Valfaris is solid. The pacing is great, and with the exception of the back half, the difficulty curve isn't too bad. The juggling of weapons in relation to their balance is well done, and the constant boss fights are a fulfilling challenge once you overcome each foe. Provided you enjoy the Nintendo-hard games of the past, Valfaris is well worth checking out.

Old school gamers and players looking for a challenge can do no wrong with Valfaris. It’s basically a love letter to classic run-and-gun games from the golden era of gaming. It’s fun, hard and frustrating, but like most games of the genre, you learn from your mistakes and that allows you to reach the next level. Definitely one of the best, most challenging, experience of the year.
