Why play it

Young Souls combines the beat'em up and RPG genres in a world created with stunning art direction. Explore the world of humans and that of the goblins, both teeming with enemies but also full of unexpected and friendly encounters waiting to be discovered.

Story and worldbuilding

Jenn and Tristan are two teenagers who find themselves suddenly abandoned and without a family until a good-hearted scientist adopts and brings them into his home settled within a small port town. Life in Portsbourgh for Jenn and Tristan proves uneventful. Uneventful, that is, until they uncover a portal to another world which threatens the very existence of life on Earth as we know it. Grab your weapons and set forth in search of your adoptive father through epic dungeons in the goblin realm. Arm yourself with the toughest armor and an arsenal capable of taking on the hordes of enemies and bosses that await on the other side of the portal. Your equipment is your most valuable ally in combat. Adapt your gameplay style to each dungeon by changing the items you take with you on to the battlefield.

Kicking butt in Young Souls is a blast and one of the rare co-op brawlers that is as enjoyable to play solo

Those of you who were big fans of Castle Crashers or Streets of Rage 4 will find plenty to love here. Young Souls smartly mixes RPG-lite elements with a compelling story, non-linear structure, and some impressively satisfying beat 'em up combat to make for an experience that you won't want to miss. Despite some rare performance hiccups which tarnish the Switch version slightly compared to the more powerful platforms, Young Souls still proves itself to be one of the best beat 'em up titles on the system, and we'd give this one a high recommendation to anyone who enjoys a good brawler, co-op or solo.

1P2P have delivered a stylish and superb adventure with Young Souls, a dazzling hybrid of brawlers and crawlers (dungeon, that is) that's perfectly suited for all players while delivering an amazing and challenging experience, one that will have you searching every path and going over every weapon, with every trip into a level leading to some form of satisfaction in one one way or another.

Overall, Young Souls is a fantastic beat’em up with those RPG mechanics that fed my loot and number cravings. Toss in the satisfying combat and customizability of each twin’s loadout, and I found something that I’ll want to come back to time and time again.

Young Souls is a well-designed brawler with an exciting combat system that is easy to use. The story makes an impactful impression as the wayward teens will constantly entertain you with a barrage of witty remarks while defending their sleepy town from hordes of underground monsters.

Young Souls is certainly no Streets of Rage 4, but it's still worthy of your time if you like more RPGing and loot-collecting in your 2D beat-em-up experience.

Young Souls is an experience that we advise fans of fighting games because of their challenge and excellent content, the game may need some minor improvements here and there but this will not prevent you from enjoying it.

Young Souls is definitely a lot of fun, especially if you enjoy playing games like Final Fight or Streets of Rage. Finishing up at around 12 hours seems like the perfect amount of time for a game of this nature. Long enough to experiment with different weapons and load ups but not overstaying its welcome. Young Souls is an impressive success and I look forward to what the future may hold for this up and coming indie development tandem.
