Hyper Sentinel is 'neo-retro' executed to perfection. Once you accept that the visual and audio directions are both design choices made to pay tribute to the original Commodore 64 game and sit down to take on your first Super-Dreadnought, you'll be hooked. Every time you get a 'Game Over', the only thing on your mind will be on how to prevent whatever got the best of you in preparation of your next sortie (while, at the same, time browsing the leaderboards to see how your friends are faring in each level).

It's definitely a solid fast-paced arcade shooter but Hyper Sentinel also tends to devolve into a needlessly frustrating experience.

This is on the level of a decent Newgrounds flash game, but it's being sold for fifteen dollars. It's a student project being passed off as a throwback indie title that's not worth your money.

Hyper Sentinel is a fun arcade release on PlayStation 4 that offers more than enough content for its asking price. With Arcade, Survival and Boss modes, as well as the many trophies tied to them, there is plenty to do with this homage to the good old days of the C64. Go check it out!

There is a clear sense of passion here delivered through pure fun. The developers were successful in creating a new take on concepts originally conceived decades ago. This new shoot-‘em-up not only celebrates its predecessor but delivers a colorful, energetic experience that isn't easy to put down.

Overall, Hyper Sentinel is a real treat for fans of retro gaming as it celebrates so many things, including the look, the absolutely excellent music, and a challenging style of play that will never go out of style. The fact that time was spent to layer in modern graphical touches that look incredible but don’t overshadow the retro look is very much appreciated and the sheer volume of insanity regularly on-screen more than demonstrates this game couldn’t have been possible back in the day. If you’re a retro gaming fanatic, or appreciate a good and challenging arcade-style shooter, Hyper Sentinel is highly recommended.

a game steeped in the ever-present nostalgia factor with a few fresh ideas thrown in for good measure. To really blow us away it would have been nice to see the game break the mould a bit more, but for many a title which makes retro-style games accessible, and slightly more forgiving, to younger audiences and new players is no bad thing.
